Guide 2017

You might be tempted to dismiss this stylish retreat as just another tequila bar, but in addition to its huge tequila and mezcal selection and noteworthy cocktail program, Matador has taken the charge on offering delicious food. Griddled sopes come laden with smoky beef barbacoa, pinto beans, pico de gallo, and crema, while the seared ahi tuna tacos in a soy-chipotle reduction are a crowd favorite. Even the house-made flan gets a fun twist with the addition of guava. The U-shaped bar draws a boisterous post-work crowd in the evening, when FiDi business types come to blow off steam with pitchers of margaritas as Spanish films screen overhead. But, it’s not always bumping: those seeking a quieter meal should come for the under-the-radar lunch service.

Matador quietly opened in Nob Hill in February, and immediately started competing with 20th Century Cafe for the ‘best looks in town’ award. The inventive menu is equally attractive.
